  To celebrate their 75th anniversary, Jaguar unveiled the XJ75 Platinum Concept at the Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance. Based on the XJL Supercharged, the XJ75 features Satin Matte Pearlescent White paint, black accents, an aerodynamic body kit, a trunk-mounted spoiler, and 22-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the cabin boasts leather seats with diamond suede inserts, pearlescent white trim, a bespoke Bremont clock, and a 1200-watt Bowers & Wilkins sound system. According to the XJ's Chief Designer, Giles Taylor, "From a pure design perspective, the XJ75 Platinum Concept is foremost about emphasizing the striking proportion and presence of the new XJ, with a distilled black and white theme, which conjures up the sense of precious platinum." While Jaguar says the concept was built to showcase the XJ's "customization potential", speculation suggests the car is a thinly veiled XJR. It is expected to feature a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 with 510 hp (380 kW / 517 PS) instead of the 470 hp (351 kW / 477 PS) version used in the concept. www.worldcarfans.com

  A medical student from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center tests the new Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB) Simulator developed by Professor Suvranu De and his research team at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Professor De is working to make virtual surgery feel like the real thing. He is a specialist in haptics, the science of touch. He is developing virtual surgery simulator that will allow surgeons to touch, feel, and manipulate computer-generated organs with actual tool handles used in actual surgery. This means when you use the virtual scalpel to cut into a virtual kidney, it will feel like the real thing the tool youre using has an advanced touch-feedback system that exhibits the same resistance, sponginess, flexibility, etc as a real kidney. Along with providing objective, measureable data with which to score assess budding doctors not unlike how budding fighter pilots first practice and are assessed on flight simulators virtual surgery training could reduce the need for using animals and human cadavers for medical training.

Visuo-Haptic Systems: Half-Mirrors Considered Harmful In WHC '07: Proceedings of the Second Joint EuroHaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems, 2007 In recent years, systems that allow users to see and touch virtual objects in the same space (visuo-haptic sys- tems) are being investigated. Most research projects are employing a half-mirror, while few use a video see- through, head-mounted display (HMD). The work pre- sented in this paper points out advantages of the HMD- based approach. First, we present an experiment that an- alyzes human performance in a target acquisition task. We have compared a half-mirror system with an HMD system. Our main finding is, that a half-mirror signifi- cantly reduces performance. Second, we present an HMD- based painting application, which introduces new interac- tion techniques that could not be implemented with a half- mirror display. We believe that our findings could inspire other researchers, employing a half-mirror, to reconsider their approach. www.magicvisionlab.com

Abstract: In everyday life, our interactions with objects on real tables include how our fingertips feel those objects. In comparison, current digital interactive tables present a uniform touch surface that feels the same, regardless of what it presents visually. In this paper, we explore how tactile interaction can be used with digital tabletop surfaces. We present a simple and inexpensive device --- the Haptic Tabletop Puck --- that incorporates dynamic, interactive haptics into tabletop interaction. We created several applications that explore tactile feedback in the area of of haptic information visualization, haptic graphical interfaces, and computer supported collaboration. In particular, we focus on how a person may interact with the friction, height, texture and malleability of digital objects.
