Maybe we should put out a tablet — we could call it the MaxiPad — because at this point, it seems like we’re the only ones who have yet to announce an upcoming slate. All the cool kids are doing it, which now includes Hannspree . Come November, Hannspree promises to launch a 10.1-inch multi-touch slate with a capacitive screen sporting a 1024×600 resolution. It will come armed with Nvidia’s Tegra 2 SoC with a pair...

Creative wants you to know that they’ve just launched the world’s first truly 3D audio headsets, unlike those other 3D sets you may have read about, which apparently aren’t the real deal. So how exactly can Creative make that claim? “Creative gaming headsets are the only headsets in the world to deliver a true 3D immersive experience — with sound coming from around you, above you, and from below. As games have evolved...

Just how popular are add-ons to Mozilla Firefox’s Web browser? A usage survey taken by Mozilla as of one year ago revealed that one-third of all Firefox users—at least—use add-ons in some capacity. That’s a pretty big deal, but not quite as eye-opening a number as the raw statistics from Mozilla’s official add-ons page. According to the company, more than two billion add-ons have been downloaded since Firefox’s started tracking statistics...

AMD’s Radeon HD 5000-series cards are already considerably more power efficient than anything in Nvidia’s Fermi lineup, but PowerColor’s Go Green series of cards are engineered to consume even less electrical power than reference design-cards. This passively cooled Radeon HD 5750 (PowerColor part number AX5750 1GBD5-NS3DH, to be precise) draws all the power it needs from the PCI Express bus, so it doesn’t require a dedicated six-pin...

Samsung could end Verizon’s tablet drought with its upcoming Galaxy Tab, according to tech blog Boy Genius Report . To underpin its claim, the blog has uploaded a screenshot of an internal system that quite clearly lists the Galaxy Tab among the Samsung products in the carriers inventory. The Android-based tablet will be among the many tablets different manufacturers are expected to showcase at IFA 2010 (Sept 3-8) in Berlin. But Samsung...

Any way you slice it, companies that are already in the online video business are looking to get deeper in. Reports indicate that Amazon is working to expand their video offerings to include TV and movies from the likes of NBC, Time Warner, and Viacom. The new service would likely be viewable on devices Amazon currently uses for video. Devices like the Roku, Xbox 360, and PC would all fall into this category.  Read More →

A rescue effort is currently underway to drill through 2,300 feet of dirt and rock to extract 33 Chilean miners trapped below the surface of the earth. The miners have been stuck underground since August 5, and in a worst case scenario, it could take up to three or four months to get them out. In the meantime, supplies are being snaked through a four-inch wide tube, things like shampoo, hot-weather clothes that help remove sweat, aluminum bed...

Google has been quietly dabbling in streaming movie rentals since the beginning of this year. YouTube’s repertoire of rentable movies continues to grow at a steady pace, but the service commands little attention. That is likely to change in the next few months as big G plans to add streaming movie rentals from major film studios to its catalog, according to a Financial Times report that cites several sources familiar with ongoing negotiations...

This week’s Freeware Files come courtesy of podcast aficionado (and mother of the epic dream date winner from podcast #36 ) R. Ellen Ferare. Or, rather, you can thank her for the idea. We got to talking this past weekend and she noted that she’s been having trouble finding a legitimate way to search through her desktop for this, that, and the other. Obviously, Windows’ built-in search functionality just isn’t cutting it—and I don’t...

Zotac has always had an impressive lineup of barebones Atom based Nettops, but even with the added power of the Ion 2 chipset behind it, 1080p streaming in flash could be hit or miss making them difficult to recommend for anything other than basic standard definition streaming. In response to the critical review the follow up Zboxes are now shipping with optional dual core Intel CULV processors giving them the extra kick needed to make it an...

Microsoft has never had a unified approach to online storage and sync, but it appears as though this is finally going to change. In the latest beta release of Windows Live Essentials 2011 Microsoft released a utility called Live Sync to help users manage folders across more than one PC, but this is going to be renamed yet again to Live Mesh before the final release later in the year. Just in case you’re having a hard time following the name...

Doom and gloom in the computer industry is usually a troubling sign for the economy as a whole, but if you’re on the market for new hardware this fall it could translate into some pretty big savings for you! According to the Associated Press Intel has lowered its third quarter forecast in response to weaker than expect chip sales, a key indicator for the rest of the PC industry. This was further re-enforced with shaky forecasts from both Hewlett-Packard...

Diaspora hasn’t gotten a lot of press since they wrapped up their rather creative attempt at fundraising , but the founders want you to know that not only have they been busy, but that they will have code ready for public consumption by September 15th. The ambitious anti-Facebook project was a concept pitched by a group of New York University programming students who aim to provide a service similar to Facebook, but with much tighter user...

Around a couple of weeks back, Oracle brought a patent infringement action against Google for infringing its “Java-related intellectual property.” The search giant immediately retorted by saying that the lawsuit was without merit, and even went as far as labeling it an attack on both Google and the open-source Java community. It has once again made it clear that there is absolutely no love lost between the two companies. Google has decided...
